This production of Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" by Oscar-winning film director John Schlesinger, marked the 25th anniversary of Sir Georg Solti's spe The score of Der Rosenkavalier is lush, rich, and romantic to an extraordinary degree—perhaps surprisingly so, considering that the composer had written the disturbingly edgy and modern Elektra only two years earlier. The presentation of the rose, with its soaring vocal lines sprinkled with chromatic figures reflecting the shimmering of the Der Rosenkavalier is a three-act comic opera by Richard Strauss that premiered on January 26, 1911, at the Konigliches Opernhaus in Dresden. Er sollte Recht behalten, zählt doch Der Rosenkavalier heute zu Strauss‘ meistgespielter Oper. Strauss conductors of our own time such as Andris Nelsons, Sebastian Weigle and Franz Welser-Möst (see Essential Recordings) are also more inclined to reveal the glinting blade of Elektra beneath the rococo charm, following the peerless example of Carlos Kleiber, for whom Der Rosenkavalier probably meant more than any other opera.

Der Rosenkavalier has always been the horn player’s opera par excellence, something the magnificent horn section of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra confirm at the opening of the suite, while a few bars later they deliver Strauss’s orgasmic whoopings with thrilling relish. Like all Strauss’s work, Der Rosenkavalier takes the language of post-Wagner late-Romanticism opera another stage further into modernity, not just accompanying the voice, not just heightening the emotional tone of the drama or just using leitmotifs to form a musical coherency and symbolism, but presenting the phrasing with an infinite number of meanings and inflections, hinting at deeper Richard Strauss.
